Tullimonstrum, colloquially known as the Tully monster or sometimes Tully's monster, lived in shallow tropical coastal waters of muddy estuaries during the Pennsylvanian geological period, about 300 million years ago. Examples of Tullimonstrum have been found only in the Essex biota, a smaller section of the Mazon Creek fossil beds of Illinois, United States.
This creature had a mostly cigar shaped body, with a triangular tail fin, two long stalked eyes, and a proboscis tipped with a mouth-like appendage.
Since its discovery nearly 70 years ago, the true nature of Tullimonstrum gregarium has confounded scientists. Studies have variously found it was a vertebrate, or an invertebrate, with a back-and-forth that has gone on for years. Interpretations of the fossil have likened it to molluscs, arthropods, conodonts, worms, tunicates, and vertebrates.
Approximately 60cm long. Wire in the eyes allows positioning.
This is not a toy. Not suitable for children under the age of 36 months.
