Kronosaurus was among the largest marine reptiles known from the fossil record, a formidable pliosaur that inhabited the oceans during the Early Cretaceous, roughly 100 million years ago. With an estimated length of over 9 metres (around 30 feet), it was a powerful predator built for life in open water.

This plush model is inspired by the animal’s distinctive proportions, including its large, robust skull, short neck, and four strong flippers used for propulsion. Fossil evidence shows that Kronosaurus possessed massive jaws lined with large conical teeth, well suited for gripping and crushing prey.

Kronosaurus occupied the role of an apex predator in its ecosystem. Its diet likely included large fish, ammonites and other cephalopods, and possibly even other marine reptiles. The size and structure of its jaws suggest a bite capable of subduing substantial prey.

Unlike long-necked plesiosaurs, pliosaurs such as Kronosaurus had shorter necks and larger heads, giving them a more streamlined and powerful body plan. Their four flippers worked together to propel them efficiently through the water, allowing for strong bursts of speed when pursuing prey.

Named after the Titan Kronos of Greek mythology, Kronosaurus has become one of the most recognisable predators of the prehistoric oceans. Fossils discovered in Australia and South America continue to help scientists better understand the diversity and ecology of marine reptiles during the Cretaceous.
