Horseshoe crabs are living fossils. They range from the Early Triassic to the Present day. Despite their name, they are not true crabs or crustaceans: they are chelicerates, most closely related to arachnids such as spiders, ticks, and scorpions.
In the fossil record, famous examples include the trackways from the Jurassic Solnhofen, where the horseshoe crab is found at their end. Its final journey was preserved throughout time.
