This plush ammonite is inspired by one of the most distinctive fossils found in the geological record. Ammonites were marine cephalopods that lived in Earth’s oceans for hundreds of millions of years, flourishing long before the dinosaurs disappeared. Their beautifully coiled shells remain among the most recognisable fossils, preserved in rocks across the world.

The plush reflects the key features of the animal’s shell, including its structured, multi-chambered spiral. In life, these chambers were connected by a tube known as the siphuncle, which allowed the ammonite to regulate buoyancy by adjusting the balance of gas and liquid within the shell. This system helped the animal move up and down through the water column.

The model also includes aptychi, the paired calcified plates interpreted as part of the ammonite’s beak or jaw apparatus. Although the soft body of ammonites is rarely preserved, fossils and comparisons with living cephalopods help scientists reconstruct how these animals once lived.

Each new chamber in the shell formed as the ammonite grew, producing the elegant spiral that makes ammonites such prized specimens for both scientists and collectors today. Though long extinct, they remain an important window into ancient marine ecosystems and the deep history of life on Earth.
